Arriving at the South Rim of Grand Canyon
Lower-portion passengers should arrive at the South Rim of
Grand Canyon the day before the river trip begins
to allow their duffel to be transported to Phantom Ranch by
pack mule. The mule train leaves for Phantom
Ranch at 4 a.m. each morning. The duffel must be delivered to the Bright Angel
transportation desk before 4:30 p.m. the day before the river trip. For
overnight lodging at South Rim and duffel arrangements, contact
Grand Canyon Lodges.
Suggested Transportation Arrangements
Suggested transportation arrangements for lower-portion river
trips are listed below. Click here for contact information for
transportation
providers:
- Some passengers travel to the South Rim of Grand
Canyon by car, bus, or air (via the Grand Canyon Airport). At the end of the
trip, you can then charter a flight back to the South Rim from Peach Springs to
pick up your car, or to Las Vegas to join a commercial flight.
Bus service also is available on a
charter basis for return to the South Rim.
- Passengers also sometimes leave a car at Peach
Springs before the river trip and fly or ride the bus to the South Rim to begin
their trip.
- A driver may be
hired to deliver your car to Peach Springs; when you finish the trip, your
car will be waiting for you.
Hiking into Grand Canyon As of 2007
the National Park Service requires all passengers hiking in or out of river
trips to be accompanied by a qualified hiking guide provided by the outfitter.
If you are hiking in the day before your trip or spending the night at Phantom
Ranch after your upper portion river trip you will not need to be accompanied
by a guide. Passengers hiking into lower portion trips meet the guide at the
trailhead early in the morning on the first day of the trip. You hike at your
own speed and the guide follows the last person. The boats will be waiting at
the sandbar below Phantom Ranch. Average hiking time is 5 to 6 hours, and the
length is 9.5 miles with an elevation change of 4500 feet.
Give yourself plenty of rest time along the
way, but plan to meet the boats by 11 a.m. You may carry your own duffel or
arrange to have it sent down by mule. Carry plenty of snacks and water. Lunch
will be served at the boats when you arrive at the river.
Packing for the Trip Diamond River
recommends that you bring along the following items for your trip: duffle bag,
towel, swimsuit, rain suit with hood, extra shoes, jacket or sweatshirt,
shorts, nightwear, hat, camera, sunscreen, water bottle, and prescription
medicines. Complete, detailed information about what to bring or not to bring
will be provided when you book your trip. Or click
here At the boats, you will receive a waterproof
storage bag and waterproof metal box (12 x 6 x 7 inches) for your camera,
raingear, sunscreen, and other small items you wish to keep close at hand on
the boat. Your duffel will be placed in the bag, along with a sleeping bag and
waterproof cover provided by Diamond for use during the river trip.
Handling Luggage You may leave extra
luggage that you do not bring with you on the river trip in your vehicle, or
leave it in Las Vegas at the airport or your hotel.
Getting Acquainted Members of the
Diamond organization will introduce themselves and instruct lower-portion
passengers on packing and stowing waterproof bags and boxes. They will review
the rules and conduct to be observed during the expedition and demonstration
proper use of life preservers, which are to be worn at all times by all persons
aboard the boats. The boats will remain at Phantom Ranch sandbar only long
enough to disembark upper-portion passengers and board those going on the
second half.
Completing the Trip at Diamond Creek
Lower-portion trips end at Diamond Creek, road conditions
permitting. Members of the expedition who are able and willing will be asked to
help de-rig the boats and load gear onto the truck. Diamond River Adventures
will then transport all passengers to Peach Spings with planned arrival between
1 p.m. and 2 p.m.
Transportation from Peach Springs All
river trip passengers may depart at once on previously arranged transportation,
or you may choose to stay overnight at Peach Springs Hualapai Lodge at your own
expense. Click here for typical transportation arrangements for
lower-portion trips. To return to Page for your vehicle
or to Las Vegas to meet a commercial flight, reliable and convenient
charter flights can be
arranged. Buses are also available to
the South Rim of Grand Canyon by charter, or you may
hire a driver to deliver your car to Peach
Springs to meet you.
