Arriving in Page
Plan to arrive in Page, Arizona, on or before the day of the trip departure. You will probably need lodging in Page, and Diamond River Adventures can assist with reservations if you wish.

Suggested Transportation Arrangements
Suggested transportation arrangements for upper-portion river trips are listed below. Click here for contact information for transportation providers:
  • Upper-portion passengers typically arrive in Page by commercial flight, charter flight, bus, or car. If you drive a camper or trailer to Page, drive to our office at 916 Vista for suggestions on parking facilities.
  • At the end of the river trip, you'll hike out of the canyon to the South Rim. From there, you can get a commercial flight from the Grand Canyon Airport to Las Vegas. You also can charter a flight, a bus or van back to Page.
  • Another option is to park your vehicle at the South Rim before the trip and charter a flight or bus to Page to begin your trip; when you arrive at the rim after the trip, your car will be waiting.
  • A third option is to hire a driver to deliver your vehicle from Page to the South Rim.

Red Wall CavernPacking for the Trip
Diamond River recommends that you bring along the following items for your trip: duffle bag, towel, swimsuit, rain suit with hood, extra shoes, jacket or sweatshirt, shorts, nightwear, hat, camera, sunscreen, water bottle, and prescription medicines. Complete, detailed information about what to bring or not to bring will be provided when you book your trip. Or click here.
At the orientation meeting at the hotel, you will receive a waterproof storage bag that contains a sleeping bag and waterproof tarp for your trip. Your duffel bag will fit inside the waterproof bag. In addition, you will receive a waterproof box (12 x 6 x 7 inches) for your camera, raingear, sunscreen, and other small items you wish to keep close at hand on the boat.

Handling Luggage
You may leave extra luggage that you do not bring with you on the river trip at our office in Page before your trip. You can pick up your luggage on your return between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Orientation Meeting
The evening before departure, we host a "get acquainted" orientation meeting in Page. Members of Diamond River Adventures will answer all questions regarding your trip. We also will instruct you on packing and stowing waterproof bags and boxes and review the rules and conduct to be observed during the expedition.

Completing the Trip at Phantom Ranch
This "half-way" river trip concludes deep in the Inner Gorge of Grand Canyon. Our boats arrive at the sandbar below Phantom Ranch between 8 and 9 a.m. Upper-portion passengers leave at the sandbar while lower-portion passengers board the boats. The boats remain there only long enough for lunch and passenger exchange.

Hiking Out of Grand Canyon
The Bright Angel Trail from the river to the South Rim of Grand Canyon is 9.5 miles long, with an elevation gain of 4,500 feet. Average hiking time is 7 hours.
Experienced hikers may wish to begin hiking to the South Rim immediately after leaving the river trip, carrying their own duffel, snacks, and canteen with water. We suggest, however, that you plan to spend the night on the South Rim after the hike out. Several lodges and a Park Service campground are located on the rim. A backcountry permit is not required for camping UNLESS you plan to camp overnight along the trail or somewhere else in the Canyon.
Less experienced hikers usually arrange to spend the night at Phantom Ranch and hike up early the next day. Arrangements can be made to have your duffel brought out by mule. The duffel can be claimed at the rim after 4:30 p.m. on the day after your river trip ends. For those passengers who spend the night at Phantom Ranch, a mule may be available for a ride out of the Canyon. All these services must be arranged well in advance through Grand Canyon Lodges.
