Grand Canyon Rafting Check List

What should I bring with me?

Following is a suggested packing list. Rain gear is especially important: Please pack a complete rainsuit for ALL trips, not ponchos. You may experience temperature extremes at any time of year. The river water is only 50 degrees F and when riding rapids on a cloudy day (even in July) you will want a rainsuit handy.

  • Duffel Bag. When packed, it should measure approximately 26 x 14 x 14 inches so that it will fit into our waterproof bag that we supply for your use on the river. Duffel bag dimensions may vary. Soft, frameless backpacks can be used as duffel bags. No rigid frames, please!
  • Rainsuit. Not just for rain, also needed for riding through the rapids on all trips. Do not bring ponchos.
  • Shoes. Bring two pairs: One comfortable, well worn shoe with a good tread. One Teva-style sandal is okay. Hiking boots are okay for hiking in or out of the Canyon, but we do not consider hiking boots a necessary item on the river.
  • Socks. Several pair, to prevent sunburned ankles and feet and to wear while hiking.
  • Swimsuit. Quick-drying. Women often find a two-piece convenient for use as underclothing while on the river.
  • Underwear. Several pair.
  • Hat. With tie strings and a brim that will shade your face.
  • Jacket, Sweater or Sweatshirt/Sweatpants.
  • Shirts or Tops. At least one should have long sleeves. Quick drying.
  • Slacks and/or Shorts. Comfortable and quick-drying. Be sure to bring at least one pair of light weight, cotton long pants (also good for sun cover). No jeans.
  • Nightshirt (pajamas). Optional.

Following are some suggested personal items to consider packing:

  • Canteen. One 2-quart, two if hiking in or out of the Canyon.
  • Personal prescription medicines
  • Flashlight and extra batteries
  • Camera, film and extra battery
  • Small pillow. Optional
  • Wet suit booties . Optional. These are good for oar trips.
  • Towel
  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Comb and/or brush
  • Soap. We prefer biodegradable.
  • Shampoo. We prefer biodegradable.
  • Razor
  • Small mirror (not glass)
  • Women's sanitary kit
  • Hand lotion
  • Lip protection (chapstick)
  • Sunscreen lotion
  • Insect repellent
  • Sunglasses
  • Small collapsible fishing rod and tackle. Optional (Arizona fishing license required)
  • Small day pack or backpack. Optional (handy during hikes)
