Grand Canyon Frequently Asked Questions

I've never been rafting before. Which trip should I take?

All of our trips are suitable for beginners. No river experience is required, and don't worry if you are a nonswimmer. Everyone must wear a life preserver while on the boats.
We offer both full-length trips in Grand Canyon and partial trips ranging from 4 to 13 days. Full trips begin at Lee's Ferry and go to Whitmore, a distance of 188 river miles, or to Diamond Creek, a distance of 226 river miles. Partial trips include upper-portion trips, which beginning at Lee's Ferry and end at Phantom Ranch; and Lower-Portion trips, which begin at Phantom Ranch and end at Diamond Creek. Click here for detailed trip descriptions and planning information.
The partial trips require either a hike/mule ride in or out of Grand Canyon. If you choose one of these trips, be sure you are in very good condition. Children need to be 8 or older for motor trips and 12 or older for oar trips.

What is the difference between a motor and oar trip?

Diamond River Adventures offers both oar-powered or motorized trips. Both types of boats give you an exciting ride through the rapids and visit the same sites along the way.
Motor boats are larger than oar boats and can accommodate 12 to 14 people quite comfortably. They are highly unlikely to overturn and travel a little faster than oar boats. They are powered by a small 30-hp engine at the back of the boat. Modern technology has made them quiet and efficient. Motor trips normally have two boats with a maximum of 28 people.
Oar boats are smaller than motor boats and can accommodate four to five people. Oar trips spend more time on the river each day and take more days on the river. Our guides will do the rowing. These trips feature nearly the same amenities as the motorized trips, while providing a more intimate experience with the Canyon. They tend to appeal to the more adventuresome. Oar trips normally have four to five boats with no more than 24 passengers in all.
It is not unheard of for oar boats to flip over on occasion. However, don't worry if you're a non-swimmer: everyone is required to wear a life preserver at all times while on the boats.

Where are the largest rapids?

You will travel exciting rapids on all the trips. The greatest concentration of rapids is between river mile 75 and 113. Lava Falls and Crystal Rapid are located on the lower section below Phantom Ranch. House Rock and Hance Rapid are above Phantom Ranch. You will not be disappointed in either section.
