What is the best time of year to go rafting?

Trips are offered between April and October. For a detailed schedule, go to the Plan Your Trip area of this site. Here are some factors to consider when selecting the time of year to go.

  • Water levels are fairly constant year-round. Water temperatures are quite cool, averaging 48 to 50 degrees F year round. Click here for a link to the USGS streamflow chart.
  • April and May have mild weather. The water will probably be clear mid-to-late-May. Warm days with temperatures ranging from 50 to 80 degrees, cool nights with temperatures 10 to 20 degrees cooler. A favorite time for people who want a less crowded river.
  • June has hot dry days with temperatures ranging from 90 to 105 degrees and mild nights with temperatures 10 to 20 degrees cooler. Clear water. High season for river travel.
  • July has HOT days with temperatures ranging from 90 to 105 degrees. Afternoon sprinkles or rains from mid-July on can cool things down considerably. Nights are warm.
  • August has HOT days, afternoon/evening sprinkles or rain, and warm nights.
  • September has mild days, cool nights. Less rain, less river traffic.
  • April, September, and October can be very nice. However, there is always a chance of storms on these early and late trips. The cooler weather allows for more pleasant hikingconditions.

Whitewater Rafts in the Grand CanyonWhat is the water like?

The Colorado River through Grand Canyon is controlled by releases from Glen Canyon Dam. River levels can fluctuate several feet each day, depending on demand for electrical power at the dam generators. The average yearly flow of the Colorado is fairly constant. River water temperatures average 50 degrees F all year.
